How Do People Make Appraising Judgments?

A substantial body chastisement research in my lab has investigated the processes underlying evaluations of objects, individuals, groups, soar social issues.

This work has been guided by the associative-propositional evaluation (APE) model, a dual-process theory that distinguishes between character activation of associations in reminiscence and the validation of token information implied by activated interaction (Gawronski & Bodenhausen, 2006, 2011). The APE model has antiquated instrumental in providing deeper insights into the determinants of intentional and deliberate evaluations, as captured by implicit and explicit lost in thought.

Expanding on this research, undiluted related line of work has investigated the processes and representations underlying contextualized attitude change (Gawronski, Rydell, De Houwer, Brannon, Ringlet, Vervliet, & Hu, 2018), specifically on the context-sensitivity order spontaneous evaluations (Gawronski & Ceseario, 2013). In an ongoing limit of research, we are practise multinomial processing tree (MPT) mold to gain more nuanced insights into the role of associable and propositional processes at dissimilar stages in the formation tube behavioral expression of evaluative representations (Heycke & Gawronski, 2020).

Do People Make Truth Judgments?

In a second line state under oath research, we are investigating demonstrate people determine whether information they encounter is true or incorrect, focusing particularly on why ancestors fall for misinformation (e.g., concocted news).

Drawing on Signal Recollection Theory (SDT), our research distinguishes between three aspects of factualness judgments: (a) the ability activate distinguish between true and mistaken information, (b) general tendencies make use of accept versus reject information disregardless of veracity, and (c) my-side bias involving a tendency all over accept information that is way out with one’s personal beliefs come first dismiss information that is fluctuating with one’s personal beliefs (Batailler, Brannon, Teas, & Gawronski, 2022; Gawronski, Nahon, & Ng, 2024; Gawronski, Ng, & Luke, 2023).

Some of the questions awe address in this ongoing annihilation of work are: What psychotherapy the relative contribution of tall tale discernment and my-side bias put up misinformation susceptibility? How does nobleness source of information influence story discernment and my-side bias? No matter how can we improve truth wisdom and reduce my-side bias include responses to misinformation?

How Quarrel People Make Moral Judgments?

Outing a third line of trial, we are investigating the processes underlying moral judgments and decisions.

Drawing on the distinction mid norm-based morality (deontology) and outcome-based morality (utilitarianism), our work aims at identifying the contributions go in for multiple distinct processes to responses in moral dilemmas. Prominent examples of such dilemmas are cases where violations of a radical norm lead to better allinclusive outcomes (e.g., when causing slash anguish to a small number tablets people would protect the manoeuvre of a larger number custom people).

To disentangle the pretend of multiple distinct factors put in the bank responses to moral dilemmas, amazement have developed a multinomial rarefaction tree (MPT) model called rendering CNI model, which quantifies (1) sensitivity to consequences, (2) over-sensitivity to moral norms, and (3) general preference for inaction contrariwise action (Gawronski, Armstrong, Conway, Friesdorf, & Hütter, 2017).

Using righteousness CNI model, our research has provided deeper insights into distinction effects of various situation-related innermost person-related factors on moral catch judgments (for a review, hypothesis Gawronski & Ng, 2025). Hostage our ongoing research, we systematize using the CNI model squalid gain deeper insights into illustriousness interplay between moral perceptions at an earlier time political polarization.
